Study: California Ranks Among Top States Rich Gen Xers Are Leaving

9/23/20

Gen Xers are expected to inherit trillions in wealth passed along from boomers throughout the next 25 years. Local economies can benefit from this cohort - soon to be flush with financial capital - especially if they have been successful in attracting rich Gen Xers recently.

In its second annual study, SmartAsset analyzed the latest IRS data to uncover where rich Gen Xers are moving. More specifically, the study uncovered the states with the highest net migration of people between the ages of 35 and 54 who earn at least six figures.

Among all 50 states and the District of Columbia, California ranks as the second most popular state wealthy Gen Xers were leaving between 2017 and 2018.
