Los Angeles and Long Beach Rank as Big Cities Where Residents Spend More on Housing

Housing costs are the largest expense for the average American family and can be particularly burdensome for residents in major U.S. cities where the cost of living tends to be higher.

In a new study, SmartAsset analyzed data on the 50 most-populated U.S. cities to find where residents spend the most on housing. We considered two metrics: median monthly housing costs and housing costs as a percentage of income.

Out of the 50 most-populous U.S. cities, Los Angeles ranks in the 2nd spot in SmartAsset’s study on where people spend the most on housing. The city’s median monthly housing costs ($1,627) make up 31.25% of local household income. Long Beach ties with NYC for the fourth spot, with median monthly housing costs ($1,466) making up 28.55% of local household income.
